NORTH FLORIDA – In response to the U.S. Mint’s announcement that the final 232 “Omega Penny” sets will be auctioned exclusively through high-end auction house Stacks Bowers, a North Florida artist known as Legboot has launched a crowdfunding campaign with one bold goal: buy the last pennies and release them into circulation, so regular Americans have a chance to find one.

The Mint’s decision to auction the last pennies only to wealthy bidders struck many collectors and ordinary citizens as unfair. Instead of letting the public own a piece of American history, the last 2025 cent sets will likely be sold to elite collectors, investors, and institutional buyers.

Legboot wants to change that.

“The Mint is basically saying the last pennies are for the rich only,” said Legboot.

“So I’m trying to buy them, and put them right back into the pockets of everyday people.”

If the GoFundMe campaign succeeds, any sets won at auction will be broken apart, placed into bank rolls, and quietly deposited into circulation. Instead of being locked in vaults, slabs, or investment portfolios, the “last pennies” would end up in pockets, cash registers, piggy banks, vending machines, and coin jars across America.

“Imagine buying a soda and accidentally finding the last U.S. penny ever made,” Legboot added.

“That’s the America I want to live in.”

The fundraiser argues that public institutions should serve the public, not just the wealthy. Supporters say the plan is a small but symbolic act of financial democracy: a reminder that U.S. currency belongs to everyone.
